Dr. Yoon-Kyoung Sung is a Professor of Medicine in the Division of Rheumatology at the Hanyang University College of Medicine, Seoul, Republic of Korea. He is the chief of Clinical Research Center and section of pharmacoepidemiology at Hanyang University Hospital for Rheumatic Diseases (HUHRD) in Seoul.
Dr. Sung obtained his MD and PhD at Hanyang University in Seoul. Then he obtained a Master’s in Public Health from Tokyo University School of Public Health in Tokyo. He returned as an Assistant and then Associate Professor of Hanyang University School of Medicine and to the HUHRD. In 2013, he was promoted to chief of the Department of Rheumatology in HUHRD and the full professor of Hanyang University.
His research includes epidemiologic studies in osteoporosis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and RA, including outcomes study, clinical trials and comorbidities. In 2008, Dr. Sung established the KORean Observational study Network for Arthritis (KORONA), the first Korean multicenter prospective cohort for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients with Dr. Bae. He has established and managed several HUHRD based cohorts for lupus (HUMAN LI), knee osteoarthritis (HUMAN OAI), and RA with interstitial lung disease (HUMANISM). He is also involved as a main contributor to the biologics registry for RA patients and the tofacitinib registry in HUHRD. Dr. Sung has tried to improve the quality of patient care for RA patients through clinical research, especially with regard to lupus and RA patients, especially those who are using glucocorticoids, immunosuppressive agents or biologic agents. He has published over 120 peer-reviewed articles, 200 abstracts.
