Hans Ulrich Scherer (MD PhD) is Associate Professor of Rheumatology at the Department of Rheumatology, Leiden University Medical Center, The Netherlands. He studied medicine at the Free University and Humboldt University of Berlin and at Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen, Germany. He was trained in internal medicine and rheumatology by Prof. G.R. Burmester (Berlin) and Prof. T.W.J. Huizinga (Leiden). He received his training in Immunology at the Department of Immunology at Tübingen University under supervision of Prof. H.G. Rammensee and at the Laboratory of Experimental Rheumatology in Leiden under supervision of Prof. R.E.M. Toes. His research focusses on autoreactive B cell responses in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, in particular in rheumatoid arthritis, and includes the glycobiology of (auto-)antibodies.
